Yesterday, I posted the official movie trailer of Noah which stars stars Russell Crowe, Sir Anthony Hopkins, Jennifer Connelly and Emma Watson. I even posted brief insights about the stars’ religious views. I wondered about the biblical accuracy of the movie. I think Russell Crowe in the interview blurb below partially answers my inquiry.
Crowe believes the audience is going to be surprised to find out what kind of person Noah is….
At one point in the story the son says, “I thought you were chosen because you were good.” And [Noah] goes, “I was chosen ’cause I can get the job done, mate.”
But that is Hollywood’s story, not Noah’s – or God’s. What does Scripture say about Noah (emphasis added)?
“6 The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6 And the Lord regretted that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart. 7 So the Lord said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens, for I am sorry that I have made them.” 8 But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord. 9 These are the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation. Noah walked with God.” Genesis 6:5-9 (ESV)
Further insight about Noah is given in the New Testament.
“7 By faith Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household. By this he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.” (Hebrews 11:7, ESV)
And…
“4 For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment; 5 if he did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with seven others, when he brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly” (2 Peter 2:4-5, ESV)
The Bible speaks differently about Noah than what Mr. Crowe and his movie offer. What people should be more surprised about how God used Noah to proclaim His coming judgment. And that people should see themselves, not as Noah, but as the wicked people who opposed God.
What Noah should be portraying is, just like Noah, we too can find “righteousness that comes by faith” – faith in Jesus Christ whom Noah points forward to. As Scripture states “for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith” (Gal. 3:26, ESV).
If that were in the movie Noah, people would be, in Crowe’s words, “quite surprised what Noah actually, really means.”
